South Africa cricket board suspended: Does this suggests ICC will ban SA Team?
At present, South African Cricket goes through their worst ever phase since 1991. A decade long maladministration, recent corruption charges and payment row have resulted in South Africa’s government taking control of the Cricket in country.
The Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC)- a government body overlooking the broader sports within the country – recently suspended the Cricket South Africa with immediate effect.
According to Article 2.4 (c) and (d) of the ICC Constitution, any board with Government interference won’t be allowed to participate in tournaments or play against ICC’s board members.
The article imposes an obligation on Members to conduct democratic elections without government interference and maintain a process in its governance and / or administration for cricket respectively.
Report By Cricbuzz :-
As per the reports on Cricbuzz, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) wrote a letter to the CSA demanding- “the CSA board and people senior executives who serve ex-officio on the board (the company secretary, the acting CEO, the CFO and therefore the COO) are directed to step apart from the administration of CSA on full pay” till a month-long investigation is conducted by the committee.
“This has clearly caused great concern and consternation amongst your own members, former and current members of the national team of the Proteas, stakeholders, sponsors, and members of the cricket-loving public. There are often little question that this has caused cricket to lose the trust and confidence of members of the general public , stakeholders, sponsors and therefore the players represented by SACA [the South African Cricketers’ Association]. All this has brought cricket into disgrace,” the letter added.
SASCOC also clarified their current stance within the letter as they added that they tried their best to deal with issues within the CSA within the previous meetings but CSA failed “to make the… forensic report available to the SASCOC board despite promises” to try to to so.
“SASCOC has attempted to deal with these issues in two meetings with the CSA board: one was exploratory, and therefore the other did not happen mainly due to the very fact that CSA did not make the… forensic report available to the SASCOC board despite promises and undertakings by CSA to try to to so. Cricket South Africa is in receiving of our letter which records that the board’s decision to form the report available only on a limited basis to the president and board members of SASCOC, is totally unreasonable and irrational given the apparent nature and scope of the report,” the letter added.
Both ICC and CSA haven’t spoken a word on the news yet. But if SASCOC continues seizing control over CSA and its function, the choice to suspend CSA might jeopardize the longer term of South African Cricketers.
